Featured: All Things Farmer

Today I am so excited to be featured on my friend James' blog All Things Farmer. If you haven't had a chance to see the interview here it is!

1. How do you think growing up with your family in Dallas has influenced your style?
I love this question!  My mom is very fancy.  She loves to get dressed up and always preferred to be over dressed than underdressed.  I also have two sisters so we have such a great time playing with hair and makeup and fashion.  Dallas is full of so many chic women with great style as well and the home of great shopping: Neiman Marcus, Highland Park Village and Stanley Korshak!

2. If you were a color, what would you be and why?
I adore blue and white!  Can I be two colors?  I do a weekly blog post about all things blue and white
because I am a little bit obsessed!  I have some of my grandmother's blue and white china that means
so much to me and I think that probably influenced me a bit.

3. What are some of your favorite heirlooms? What do you love about them? How have you incorporated them into your decor?
My mother in law has given Justin and I some wonderful treasures including the monogrammed silver
she received when she was married to Justin's father.  It was her wedding gift to us and we really
treasure it.  The W monogram is very pretty and unique so we use it on everything now, from linens to

4. What's your favorite room in your home?
This is a hard one.....I think it is the dining room but  the library comes in a close second.  The dining
room is special because we have had some wonderful times around the table with family and friends.
We ended up making our dining room smaller when we did some renovations to our home because we
really wanted a round dining table.  The library is great because it is filled with so many treasured
books and mementos.

5. Favorite scent?
My husband wears Kheil's Musk Oil and I love it!

6. I have loved being an Editor-At-Large at Southern Living with you! Tell us about one of your favorite Southern Living moments.
Getting to know you is one of them!  Truly, the places we have gone and people we have met are the
most wonderful rewards and ones that I didn't anticipate from this job.  The Southern Living Team is
amazing.  Lindsay Beirman is a wonderful teacher without realizing it.  I learn something new from him
every time we are together.

7. What's your favorite garden flavor? How do you incorporate it into one of your favorite dishes?
I am a rosemary fanatic so this is my time of year!  I love it with meat or a vegetable risotto or an Italian
Dish!  I also love it as a garnish for a drink at a holiday party.

8. I know your mother has been a major influence on your style. How do you translate the style of our mothers' generation into our own?
You have great questions! I love my mother's style and she has been a huge influence on me.  She
taught me that a smile is the best way to add style to any outfit.  She also taught me that keeping my
home in order and keeping the family together are two of the greatest gifts we can give the people we

9. What's your favorite pattern?
Hands down - Tobacco Leaf!

10. You are a fierce fashionista! If there was a fire and you could only save one haute piece of couture, what would it be and why?
My wedding dress!
11. Weddings are such a major part of your life--your latest book Wedding Inspirations is so beautiful. Tell us: Do you still get teary-eyed at "I do"?
Absolutely!  I love weddings!  We went to a beautiful wedding a few weeks ago that took place at the
Bride's family ranch and I got so emotional.  I always keep tissues in my handbag at a wedding.

12. What's the last meal you made at home? Who did you share it with?
I made Dean Fearings Tortilla Soup Cornbread Dressing for my in-laws over Thanksgiving.  It was a
hit with lots of Southwestern Flavor!

13. I am always telling my clients that coffee tables are like mini representations of our lives. So what's on your coffee table?
A bowl full of duplicate photographs (for people to flip through and take home if they want!), a big
blue pottery bowl filled with four orchids and some moss and lots and lots of beautiful books!

Millepied, a professional ballerina, was a choregrapher on the set of Black Swan where the two met in 2009. The bride wore a beautiful tea-length dress by Rodarte. Her flats and floral crown added to the intimacy of the event.

shoptalk: is it acceptable to wear black to a wedding?

A classic staple in every woman's wardrobe is a little black dress. But is a black dress appropriate to wear to a wedding?

Today on ShopTalk, I put together two appropriate looks that are festive and wedding-appropriate LBDs! I had so much fun creating these looks and the fun pops of color are perfect accents for these gorgeous dresses.

Photograph your wedding with your camera phone!

Kim Thomas, Photojojo’s photographer has a fun step-by-step on how to shoot a wedding with our smart phones. She shot a wedding in San Franscisco using a camera phone and the photos turned out beautiful! This is such a fun idea and a huge money saver by not hiring a professional photographer.
Kim’s essentials for shooting the big day through the lense of your phone are a camera bag, your phone, another camera phone (as a backup), a portable backup charger, cell lenses, and an optional mount or tripod mount.

In any wedding, the lighting is very important in order for the pictures to turn out just perfect. The HDR mode on your phone helps to hone in on the exposure of the photos. You always want to find the natural light!

After capturing all of the special moments, Kim used Instagram to edit the photos and PhotoForge2 to straighten some of them as well. Instagram has so many fun options and completely change the way a photo looks!

It is also so important to have a backup phone plugged in! You never know how quickly your phone will run out of battery so plug one of your bridesmaids phone in as a backup! Click here to check out all of Kim's tips.

Lauren Bush wed David Lauren at his family ranch in Colorado last year after being together for seven years. Lauren worked closely with David's father, Ralph Lauren, in designing her beautiful gown. “Any experience of a girl picking out her wedding dress is amazing,” Lauren says, “but I have to say it was really special to work with David’s dad, to see him in action with his team."

Joy Brynat wore a beautiful, custom-made dress designed by her close friend, Angela Missoni. She wed David Pope in The Hamptons in 2008.  I absolutley love this shot of her on her special day!

Black and white is one of my favorite color combinations. It is timeless especially when incorporated into a wedding. The photo on the left of the bride and groom starting their first dance on the black and white marble floor is so beautiful! The combination can be incorporated into any part of your wedding from details on the dress to the invites.

Tricia Nixon and Ed Cox on their wedding day

On June 12, 1971, the very first White House wedding took place in the Rose Garden. Tricia Nixon, the daughter of Richard Nixon, married Edward Cox. The dress, designed by Priscilla of Boston was an elegant pearl and lace trimmed with a lower cut.

The late Lady Diana Spencer wore one of the most iconic dresses in history when she wed Prince Harry on July 29, 1981. She was one of the first royals who had their public life under a microscope as a celebrity, so of course her wedding was no exception. The dress she chose to wear on her special day did not disappoint. Designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the ivory silk gown covered in pearls and lace was accompanied by a 25-foot train. The two designers even had a back up dress just in case.

The Save the Date card is the first taste that your guests will receive of your wedding style. It sets the tone and theme for your wedding. Take a look at these precious Save the Date cards.

I love the idea of having a watercolor of you and your future husband on your Save the Date. It's almost as if you two are welcoming your guests before they even arrive.

This Save the Date used cloth as the material instead of stationary. It has a rustic feel and the State of Texas as the focal point lets the guest know that they will be attending a Southern gathering.

The calligraphy on this Save the Date so whimsical and elegant but the tone is so casual. I'm sure the wedding was a perfect fusion.

This is my absolute favorite Save the Date! I can just picture the bride and grooms guest opening these cards with delight and being transported back to memories they shared with the bride and groom at that age.

Which Save the Date is your favorite?

Vogue had a monumental month in January of 2005. The magazine featured a bride on their cover the very first time in the magazines history. The lucky bride is Donald Trump’s beautiful wife, Melania Trump. Melania wore an extravagant gown by John Galliano. The unforgettable gown was decorated with a 13-foot train and a 16-foot veil. Melania asked her fashion advisor Andre Leon Talley, “how do I walk around in this?” Talley responded, “This is a heavy dress, Melania, so eat, drink, and be healthy or you will faint.”

Something Blue...

Blue and white is my absolute favorite color combination. Especially when there is a small blue accent on a crisp white wedding dress.

Every bride knows that on her wedding day she must have Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue on for good luck. Here are some creative ways to incorporate blue into your wedding day. The various monograms stitched on the inside of the dresses are my favorites!

Audrey Hepburn is one of my absolute favorite actresses and style icons. She was the epitome of elegance and always carried herself with such grace and her wedding was no exception. On September 25, 1954 Audrey married her costar Mel Ferrer after meeting and falling in love on the set of Ondine. She wore an elegant tea-length dress by Balmain with chiffon sleeves and a simple collar.

Jenna Bush Hager was married at the Bush Family Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas in 2008. With the beautiful Texas Hill Country as a backdrop this wedding looked like the most perfect southern soirée and the elegant embroidery on her short-trained Oscar de la Renta gown was the perfect touch.

Kate Moss has been a fashion icon from the runway to the street for over 20 years. However, I have never seen her look more effortlessly beautiful than she did at her wedding to James Hince, the guitarist of the Kills.

The Great Gatsby inspired wedding was featured in the September 2011 issue of Vogue. The whimsical dress designed by John Galliano was a slim fit with sheer sleves and a delicate train. Galliano said that in designing her dress, "She dared me to be John Galliano again."

A White Wedding

Photos courtesy of: Wedding Inspiration, Vogue, Style Me Pretty & Pinterest.

Today's wedding board is inspired by one of my favorite photos of my sister, Kari, on her wedding day (see top left). Kari looked absolutely stunning in her Monique Lhuillier wedding dress. Her choice was a strapless A-line gown in white lace that was covered in a layer of tulle with gorgeous floral beading on top. The result was a feminine combination of traditional lace and modern tulle that sparked the look
of the rest of her wedding.

For more on Kari's wedding and other ideas and inspiration for your perfect wedding, be sure to look out for my newest book, Wedding Inspiration out in September!

I hope your Wednesday is as fresh and soothing as today's inspiration board!

Iconic Brides From Past to Present: Dylan Lauren

When the queen of sweets, Dylan Lauren, walked down the aisle last summer, her wedding dress was nothing short of eye candy. Dylan revealed her silk tulle-and-duchesse satin dress designed by her famous father, Ralph Lauren, in the pages of Vogue last August.

Ralph Lauren said of the dress, "I had to do something that was better than ever before....When you do something for your family or your daughter, I mean it's the only daughter I have -- beautiful girl. I want to just give her something that she'd really treasure and give her something that would be really amazing. I want her to feel fantastic."

I think we can all agree, Ralph Lauren did not disappoint in this one-of-a-kind design.
Dylan Lauren looked absolutely fantastic.

Gorgeous Gowns: The Perfect 1960's LWD

This dress is to die for!  It makes me want to renew my wedding vows just so I can wear a copy of this little number.  That is saying a lot because weddings and vow renewals are a lot of work!
On second thought, maybe I just need to have a little civil ceremony.  This look would be perfect for that!
That hat is pretty great too!
Would you wear a short gown for your wedding?

The List: Halo Calligraphy

Did you see one of our favorite calligraphers on Bridal Buzz?  Halo Calligraphy is on The RSVP List and we love their work!  You can check out all of their hand lettering styles on the website but we love the poems. This one is for children but wouldn't it be a great gift for your future in-laws or parents? (A word of warning: reading this might make you cry!)

You can also see the work HALO did for our clients at an Equestrian Theme Graduation Party by clicking here.  Pretty, right?

Iconic Brides from Past to Present: Kate Middleton

When I think of my favorite classic brides, Kate Middleton is at the very top of my list. It has been a little over a year since the Royal Wedding, and I still can't get over how stunning Kate's wedding gown is. She looked flawless in her dress designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

For those of you who still have Royal Wedding fever (I know I do), and can't get enough of this dress, VogueUK has a wonderful photo gallery capturing some beautiful moments from this iconic day.

Real Life Weddings: April and Dan

Today we are so excited to feature the real wedding of
April Marie Bartlett
 Daniel Francis Henry.

I adore April.  She is my life-saver at TODAY.  Whenever I go to the studio to set up our segments, she is there with a smile and huge array of brilliant ideas!  She has the ability to make anything (even a display of soda cans!!!) look beautiful!
When she told me that she had purple tulle lining her wedding gown, I knew we had to feature her special day on the blog!

From the bright colors to the fun reception, April shares the wonderful details of her big day below:

Craig Photography
Colors, Theme, Inspiration:
      Orange and Purple
      Dale Chihuly

Traditions you embraced:
Couple’s First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance and Mother/Son Dance
      Cake Cutting
Of course we had to let my Dad walk me down the aisle, he had tears in his eyes just thinking about it. What a special moment before the walk, just the two of us together.

Craig Photography
Traditions you ignored:
      Bouquet Toss
      Garter Toss and Switch
      All men for groomsmen
      Not seeing bride before ceremony
We spent the day before the ceremony going around Pittsburgh taking photos with our bridal party -- what we called “The Romp”

How did you think outside the box:
The majority of our wedding celebration was outside of the box.  We designed everything about our special day ourselves.  We wanted it to be creative and show off who we are as a couple.  We’re lots of fun, full of spontaneity and laughter.  We love color, early on we knew we wanted our wedding to be bright and cheerful!
Wedding Signage / Pics of the Bride and Groom along the walkways of the “Tropical Forrest” room of Phipps conservatory.
Digital photo booth with hysterical props like coconut bras, inflatable bananas and a dry erase board.  The booth had a remote control so the guests could trigger the photo themselves.
Brightly Colored Sunglasses for the Guests to wear during the ceremony on the terrace.
Hand wrote our entire ceremony which included quotes from favorite childhood books and our own Dr. Seuss-style rhyming vows.
We had our guests paint purple and orange on a canvas as they entered.  During the ceremony, we each painted a white heart, and now we have a keepsake that we all had a part in making.
Each table was labeled with the word LOVE, each in a different language.
Adhesive Floor Décor, Pics of the Couple on the Dance Floor
Flowers were spectacularly colorful and creative. Flowers by Denise Kinnaman of Dee’s Floral, with an extra orchid floral boost from Peter Krask, a NYC based florist.
Strings of stamped post cards addressed to Dan and I so guests can share their wedding day experiences.  We will get periodic reminders of their day for months to come.
Pittsburgh traditional “smiley” cookies as thank yous.
We had an Ice Tea bar in addition to the standard wedding bar, since it is one of our favorite drinks.  We provided brewed iced tea and a whole bunch of flavor syrups to create unique teas.
Pops of Color everywhere!  All of the groomsmen, Father of the Bride and Father of the Groom wore colorful Converse All-Stars sneakers. I cut out the white tulle from my wedding dress and sewed in purple instead!
